K-ETA Application Guide for Foreigners (2025)
Your comprehensive guide to understanding and applying for the Korea Electronic Travel Authorization.
What is K-ETA?
The Korea Electronic Travel Authorization (K-ETA) is an online travel authorization required for foreign nationals from visa-waiver countries who wish to enter South Korea without a visa for purposes such as tourism, business meetings, short-term study, or visiting relatives. It allows for pre-screening of travelers, enhancing border security and streamlining the entry process.
Important: K-ETA Exemption for Certain Countries (Including U.S. Citizens)
To boost tourism, the South Korean government has extended a temporary K-ETA exemption for citizens of 67 countries, including the United States, until December 31, 2025.
- If you are a U.S. citizen (or from one of the other 66 exempt countries) traveling for short-term purposes (90 days or less), you **do not need to apply for K-ETA** during this period.
- However, if you are exempt from K-ETA, you **must submit an electronic Arrival Card (e-Arrival Card)** online before your trip, starting February 24, 2025.
- You can still apply for K-ETA if you wish to benefit from its advantages (e.g., not needing to submit an arrival card upon entry), but the application fee will be charged and is non-refundable.
Who Needs to Apply for K-ETA?
You need to apply for K-ETA if you are a national of a visa-waiver country not included in the temporary exemption list, and your purpose of visit is for short-term tourism, business, conferences, or visiting family (90 days or less).
Also, if your K-ETA application is denied, or your purpose of visit is not covered by K-ETA, you will need to apply for a visa at a Korean Embassy or Consulate.
Step-by-Step K-ETA Application Process

You can check your application status on the K-ETA website by entering your passport number, date of birth, and email address.
K-ETA Validity & Benefits
Once approved, a K-ETA is generally valid for three years from the date of approval (or until your passport expires, whichever comes first), allowing for multiple entries during this period. Each individual stay must not exceed 90 days.
Benefits of having an approved K-ETA:
- Faster immigration screening at the port of entry due to pre-screening.
- No need to submit an arrival card upon entry.
- Convenience for frequent travelers to Korea.
